This hotel is a must for anyone. Marcus and Carter made our stay enjoyable. They were more than willing to assist and advise us on our first trip to the island. We can't wait to take another vacation. Just as a note, the rooms were very, very clean.

"Loved the Turquoise Shell Inn"

Jan 23, 2009 New

My husband and I spent two wonderful weeks at the Turquoise Shell Inn during Christmas & New Years. First of all let me begin by saying that your host's Carter & Marcus are absolutely outstanding, wonderful people. They gave us great advice and recommendations on just about everything that we wanted to know. They even use a rental car company who brings the car right to the hotel for you, and will pick it back up when your done. It made renting a car hassle free & easy. The hotel itself is also great. The location is perfect. Its within walking distance to everything! It is also very quiet & peaceful. The rooms are immaculate, comfortable, and have everything in them to make your stay even better. Just outside the front gate is Simpson Bay. It is a gorgeous beach. If you walk down to the end of it there is an old bus that was made into a some-what gourmet tappas kind of bar called Karakter. The food & drink were excellent. Also if your planning on doing any scuba diving while your there, I would highly recommend Ocean Explorers. We did six dives with them and it was a great experience. If we ever go back to St. Maarten we will head straight back to the Turquoise Shell Inn! Thanks Carter & Marcus for making our vacation so beautiful!

When we were planning our trip to St. Maarten the reviews on Trip Advisor helped us decide on the Turquiose Shell Inn. We found that everthing shared by other visitors was true. The rooms are immaculate and we loved having a fully equipped kitchen. The location is perfect with a secluded beach right on the property, lots of great restaurants within walking distance, easy access by bus to Philipsburg and other locations, set back from the main road where it is peaceful and quiet. The manager, Carter, was helpful and attentive to our every need- the service cannot be beat! If we are able to return to St. Maarten, we would not stay anywhere else.

My husband and I decided on the Antilles to celebrate our 25th anniversary. After months of research we selected St. Maarten - and with the help of tripadvisor.com found a very affordable, clean, and pleasant inn on Simpson Bay. Our hosts, Marcus, Carter and Pauline treated us like family. They provided advice on places to see and eat as well as insight on local customs and practices. We recognized their advice was honestly given when our first night there we ran into them at Ric's - all of us there for the nightly special.

If you are looking to be part of a big party crowd, with noisy neighbors, lots of organized activities, multiple pools, room service, and fancy meals - pay much more and select a resort. But, if you want to enjoy a nice, safe, clean, friendly environment where you can rest comfortably after a long day at the beach, shopping, or casino, Turquoise Shell Inn is an excellent choice.

Other favorites included our excursion to Prickly Pear Island on the Bluebird for a day of sun, food and snorkeling - the crew is fabulous. The Driftwood Boat Bar on Maho Beach is a fun hangout with Maya and Thelma keeping us laughing and well served. Ric's was our home base for food, drinks, and keeping up with our sports teams. All in all, we enjoyed the island, the locals, and the beautiful beaches. Amy and Chuck

I used this affordable and well-run hotel as my base for a 10 day vacation in St Maarten. Convenient access to both a beach and the real world is part of what makes this hotel enjoyable. I see it as a good choice for independent travelers.

It's a decent hotel, especially for the price you pay. You get a two-room suite with small kitchen. Air conditioning, Television with multiple stations. Newspaper delivered every morning. Everything is clean and feels more upscale than not (although the building itself is older). There's a small pool, enough to cool you down. There is a nice long quiet beach right behind the hotel, good for early morning strolls, swimming and snorkeling (bring rock shoes). It's not the kind of busy beach where you find jet skis, restaurants and rows of deckchairs. What I also liked was that there was a bit of a Caribbean community still extant along the road by the beach. It hasn't been totally developed out of existence in this area yet. The area had a bit character.

The hotel is located in Simpson Bay, surely one of the better parts of the island to stay in. The main road is located on the front side of the hotel. The hotel is set off the road so you don't hear the traffic. In the immediate area I found everything I needed while on vacation - wide variety of restaurants and bars (two dozen?), grocery stores, laundry, shops, Marci's gym, scuba shop, bike rental, car rental, drug store, internet place, and so on. All of these places are within easy walking distance. A little further away (still conceivably walkable) is the Simpson Bay Marina, Airport, casinos and Megaplex 7 cinema. Really, a nice holiday town, Florida style. If you don't want to walk at all, you you can hop on one of the island mini-buses (cost $1.50) that come by every 3 minutes, whisking you away to these spots, other beaches, and actually almost every corner of the island if you want to. Part of the attraction of this hotel is that you have access to all this while still being 20 metres away from the beach.

I think you get the idea by now that you can enjoy your vacation at this hotel even if you don't hire a car. Or of course you can hire a car, which a lot of people do (as indicated by the surprising amount of traffic on this island). There's more than enough parking at the hotel.

St Maarten is a developed, dynamic, complex, busy island. For those seeking rest and nature there are isolated corners and places to explore, but don't think this is a quiet backwater. You can dine out, party, and go out clubbing. The Dutch side of the island felt quite American to me. Part of that was due to the traffic, American fast food places, American newspapers and magazines, the American accents on the radio, and the American visitors and residents. The American feel of Simpson Bay is something I personally enjoyed, but if you're trying to avoid that you may want something on the French side.

For Europeans, this island is affordable, with a capital $. The dollar is used everywhere on the Dutch side. You understand what an enormous advantage this is when you're asked to pay for meals on the French side in euros. They'll let you pay in dollars, but the conversion rate is a killer. Some places on the French side take the dollar at par with the euro, but I don't understand why anyone would pay in euros then. The exchange rate difference is apparently creating problems for the French side.

I enjoyed St Maarten and would go back there. It's a hub for seeing this part of the Caribbean. But there are issues on the island. Crime in particular is apparently a problem although I didn't personally experience it. Indeed, everyone was friendly and helpful.

Were there any downsides of staying at this hotel? Not really. It was virtually perfect for me. The windows were a little small perhaps. The hotel owners have done a great job with this older property. They were friendly, went out of their way, and dealt with everything efficiently. They read and answer their e-mails, so if I were you I'd just contact them directly by e-mail.

Stayed for 1 night last week as we couldn't get our primary hotel for the day we arrived. I picked the hotel based on tripadvisor comments. this is a hidden gem. The unit we were in had a separate living room kitchen area and then a completely separate bedroom, ample space. Had great conversation with the owners and we discussed first impressions. Unfortunately the roadway leading to the Inn is in rough shape with some shady looking establishments but once through the gate to the property you absolutely forget about the off-property surroundings. Make no mistake this is more a motel type establishment than a hotel, but it is a good one. The owners have made the best of their location and carved out a useful niche in the market. One thing that is lost in the website is that their prices already INCLUDE the taxes and service charges that others add after their website prices. We paid $115 for the night, nothing else. This means the hotel is really only $100 per night before taxes. This is an added bonus that paid for the first round of drinks. lots of places to eat in the area and Simpson Bay beach right outside the back gate. This is a great beach to relax and often forgotten in beach reviews.

If you are looking for a great place, look no more than the Turquoise Shell Inn. Your hosts Carter and Marcus are personable, professional, and very, very helpful. The location is great and the property is wonderful. The rooms are very, very clean and a pleasure to stay in. Parking is right on site and the beach is a stone's throw away. We have stayed here for the past 2 years and will definitely return again next year. You cannot go wrong at the Turquoise Shell Inn.

I wanted to take my goddaughter someplace special for spring break this year. She is 16 and a junior in high school, and I knew I had to bribe her with a spectacular destination! Jointly, we decided on St. Maarten. We then went right to Trip Advisor and saw the glowing reviews about the Turquoise Shell Inn. So we booked our week long stay at the Inn.

Our entire stay was like a dream come true! The Turquoise Inn is nestled away from the main strip on Simpson Bay, and is equally as suprising as it's initial sighting. The adorable inn is very clean, and a safe haven during the day trips around withe island. Carter and Marcus are such gracious hosts, you almost feel like part of the family! The strive to make every experience on the island - especially for new comers - something to write home about. They alerted us to the daily "things to do", and we kept very busy under their direction. We did rent a car, but most of the area restaurants and local attractions are within walking distance. And, we always felt safe wherever we went.

We were SO pleased with our spring break trip, we plan on coming back several more times! I have also told many friends about the above par experience, and they plan on booking a vacation in the future. Thanks, Carter and Marcus, for a dream vacation and helping us th a great memory!!!

We just returned from a week on the island and can't say enough good things about our time there. The T Shell Inn is a charming small inn with wonderful service and lots of homey touches. Carter and Marcus were very helpful and went out of their way to help us have an enjoyable and comfortable stay- whether it was recommending local sites/beaches to explore , loaning us extra sunblock and snorkel gear, or dropping off the daily paper for us.

The accomodations were perfect for us-very affordable, clean, nicely decorated, and spacious for 2 people; It was great to have the small kitchenette available and I grew to love the wake up call from a rooster a few houses away each morning (I recommend some foam earplugs if this bothers you!) We did not rent a car and easily navigated the island using the local buses and an occasional taxi. The T Shell is an easy walk to many local bars and restaurants and a grocery store, convenience store and lovely french bakery and is steps away from simpson bay beach.

“Great find (and hosts!) in St. Maarten!”

My husband and I stayed here for one night (headed to Saba for a week long trip the next day), then for another two nights (2/9-2/11) on our return from Saba.

We stayed on the French side in Jan 2006, but for this year, the same place was not an option. So I searched hotels high and low on Tripadvisor, without having much luck. Then, somehow I found the Turquoise Shell Inn and reading the reviews for that, I then checked out the website. It was exactly what we were looking for - clean, safe, pool, across from the beach, reasonable price (for St. Maarten!). Still, I was a little worried because this is St. Maarten after all.

That said, when we arrived, it lived up to our expectations and more. The rooms were quite clean, comfortable, nicely decorated, large, the bedroom was separate from the living room/kitchen (microwave, oven, fridge!), and the hotel had a secluded feeling even though the main road was close by. And the beach literally is across the street in back! Great location!

Marcus and Carter are great hosts and very helpful. You need a beach towel, sunscreen, bug spray, advice, taxi, not a problem! They take great care of their guests and the property. We enjoyed our stay at the T-Shell Inn and recommend it.

“Loved Our Stay at the Turquoise Shell Inn”

5 of 5 stars

MJ24

Riverdale, NY

Mar 12, 2008

First let me start by saying that everything wonderful everyone has said about the TShell Inn is all true. Marcus and Carter are wonderful! I had the pleasure of interacting with them prior to our arrival and their attention and recommendations were on point (and we hadn't even arrived). One thing everyone should know so you don't make the same mistake I did, when you book your stay, book it thru their website and not thru Expedia or any other 3rd party website otherwise you'll end up paying an additional 18% tax which is already included in the rate which is quoted on the TShell's website.

Unfortunately we didn't leave on Friday when we were supposed to due to a snowstorm and Carter was wonderful in accomodating us to check in the next day and extend our stay by one day (so we left on Wednesday instead of Tuesday). He even confirmed that our trip to St. Barths was moved from Saturday to Tuesday.

When we finally arrived to this wonderful island, Carter greeted us with a smile, showed us to our room and gave us some advice on where to eat and what to do. The room is quaint, with a nice little kitchenette which was nice because we went to the grocery store and bought a couple of snacks to hold us over while we were there. There's a TV with cable if you need to see what's going on in the states but just know it's not the cable you are used to so if you are expecting every channel under the sun, you'll be disappointed (but then again, who goes to Paradise to watch TV). The Inn is situated away from the main road so you don't hear the hustle and bustle of the road but yet you are close enough to it to walk around and get something to eat or stop and see the bridge open up when the yachts are going in and out of the harbor. During the day, starting around 10ish until about 8ish you will hear airplanes flying overhead but that really didn't bother me being from the city, I'm used to it. And no matter where you are on the island (at least on the Dutch side) you will hear the airplanes so folks who complain about that should probably stay on the French side. The small swimming pool is nice after a long day of siteseeing to sit back and relax.

Prior to our arrival, Marcus had arranged an island tour for us with Michelen which was wonderful. After the island tour she dropped us off at the Sunset Beach Bar where we sat and watched the airplanes come in (definitely worth seeing).

All in all, the trip was wonderful (after we finally arrived) and my mom truly enjoyed her 70th birthday. (Had dinner at the Gondola, another recommendation from Carter, definitely would recommend) From the wonderful emails and recommendations from Carter and Marcus, to the wonderful beaches and restaurants (and boy, are there restaurants!). The Inn is located 10 minutes from the airport so if you are like me and don't want to rent a car, the taxi is only $8 which is great. The one thing we didn't do which hopefully on my next trip I'll do, is really spend some time on the French side. If you decide that you want to travel around the island then definitely rent a car but if not, taxis are good and so is the little bus. Definitely take advantage of the day trips to St. Barths, Saba and/or Anguilla. We went to St. Barths and had a lovely time.

A lovely piece of serenety in bustling Simpson Bay, we had a wonderful experience here. From check in - we were early and our bags were placed securely in the office so we could get out an play immediately - to check out - we needed an extra half hour , no problem!

We reserved directly thru their web site and all contact was timely and professional. When we finally got to meet Marcus upon arrival, he's just as nice in person!

Our apartment was one bedroom with a full kitchen and living area. It was well maintained, very clean and comfortable. Everything we needed for our stay was provided. The information and pictures on the web site are acurate depictions of what you find when you arrive. There is a small pool and easy access to Simpson Bay Beach. In the evenings, the gates are locked and a security guard is on property. We felt very secure.

The location can't be beat! After a long, hard day at the beach, we returned to Turquoisie Shell Inn, cleaned up and left the car for the evening. We walked all over the Simpson Bay area to all of our favorite spots and had a blast!

We would highly recommend Turquoise Shell Inn to anyone traveling to SXM looking for a clean, comfortable, safe place to stay at a really affordable price!

Thank you Marcus!

We booked this place on line and selected it because the rates were in our price range. It was difficult to find reasonable places to stay in St.Maarten. We were pleasantly greeted upon arrival and Carter and Marcus were always ready to help us and give advice on what to do and where to go. We felt comfortable right away. Our room was clean and well equiped. We loved the kitchen and all the little extras that were provided (book exchange, laundry service for a good price). This place is close to the beach and close to so many resaurants. There is always somewhere to go nearby or something to do. Some of the restaurants have entertainment also. The pool was nice and a good place to meet other travellers. We loved our stay there and would advise others to stay there.

If you're looking for a great place in a convenient location, the Turquoise Shell Inn is for you. Carter, the owner, greeted us promptly on our arrival and advised us of a wonderful place for dinner (Ric's). Our room was clean and comfortable, and very reasonably priced.

Will we go back to St. Maarten? Yes. Would we stay or recommend the Turquoise Shell Inn? Absolutely!!!! And, with complete confidence.

Thank you for a great stay!

Wow! What an excellent hotel! It in a prefect location with about 17 restaurants in walking distance along with a bunch of other shops (including a 7-Alive, like a 7-11).

The rooms have a kitchen/living room area and bed room. Tons of space! The beach is about a 100 foot walk and the airport is about a $10 taxi ride and takes about 13 minutes (if not less).

I will stay here again over the other mega resorts in a heart beat. I really enjoyed the personal touch offered.

Left the Turquoise Shell Inn yesterday, after our 3rd stay. The hotel was very well kept, as it was in our previous stays. The rooms are spacious, and always immaculately clean. Hosts were very friendly and helpful, and the mile long Simpson Bay Beach beach behind the Inn is just beautiful. You can't go wrong staying at the Turquoise Shell Inn!

I also booked to stay at the Turquoise Shell Inn after reading all of the rave reviews and because I had a few days to kill in St. Maarten on my own. It was perfect for me, for a couple of days, and I know the Island well. The room was clean and spacious, the managers very friendly and helpful although the television really didn't have very good reception. The pool is very small but that was fine for me since I had a car and easily went to the beach or shopping. It is in a great location in Simpson Bay with a lot of amenities around and reasonably priced restaurants. They gave me a great recommendation to the new restaurant Stone, nearby. Beware, on Saturday nights, the noise from the bar across the street was extremely loud well into the night. Thank goodness I am a heavy sleeper. Overall, it was a perfect, reasonably priced choice for me.

I made reservations to stay at Turquoise after reading the rave reviews and seeing their web site. The reservations were made months in advance. Our group of 6 arrived and low and behold he did not have a room for me. I was informed he had reserved a room for us at Traveler's Inn and said I should be happy because it was cheaper. He mentioned several times that I should have to pay for our groups drinks all night since my room was cheaper. He did offer to take us to the other motel and help us check in. He graciously offered to help with our bags and proceeded to take the rolling luggage while we hoisted the carrying bags. Later in our trip we realized we were scammed - 4 of us were to be in one room and me and a friend in another. That is what our reservations show, but he refused to allow us 3 or 4 to a room.

We had four nights here and loved it. Carter and Marcus were very helpful. It's not the Hilton, more of a motel but for my money I would rather stay here. The front gate takes you along a strip with bars and restaurants that are very good. The back gate takes you out to a great beach that is a gem. We had arrived from Antigua, thought St. Maarten would be more of the same, the people here were much more
friendly and helpful. If we ever make it back to the Caribbean we will just go to St. Maarten. If you are staying in Simpson Bay Happy Hour at " Lady C " is good also Toppers for a good meal.

We wanted a moderately priced hotel for one night upon our arrival in St. Maarten as we planned to go to Saba early the next day. The Turquoise Shell Inn exceeded all of our expectations. The owners (I presume) Carter and Marcus were wonderful to us and made us feel so at home! The property is quaint, clean, and an excellent location on Simpson Bay. If you walk out the back of the hotel, you are steps from a nice beach with a wonderful view of Saba and some very cool mega yachts in the bay. The hotel sits far enough off the main street in front to be very quiet, but walk out on the street and it is very "happening" and lots of fun. The marina area directly across from The Turquoise Shell was fantastic, with some cool bars to hang out amidst more mega yachts, not to mention plenty of good restaurants. The rooms at the Turquoise Shell were one bedroom apartments, and we were able to go to the market and bring back breakfast for the morning. The beds, AC, water pressure, TV channel selection were all great, not to mention the internet access worked wonderfully and the pool was really nice too! As planned, we went on to Saba and had a great time, then had planned to stay in the Marigot (St. Martin) area for a couple days before heading to Anguilla. We checked into a hotel in Marigot and I felt overwhelming disappointment. I did not like this area at all! (Though I did like Orient Beach and Grand Case on the French side)) We longed to get back to The Turquoise Shell. We got the heck out of that place in Marigot, and headed back to the Turquoise Shell Inn hoping for a vacancy. Technically, there was no vacancy as housekeeping is off on Sundays, but Carter said he would have a room for us later in the day and he prepared it himself.. That was amazing service and we appreciated it so much! We toured the entire island and got back later in the day feeling so lucky that we were back at the Turquoise Shell. We enjoyed watching the boats/yachts come in at the drawbridge around 5:00 which is just minutes from the hotel. We, like so many others on Tripadvisor, loved Maho and watching the planes land and take off. It was really exciting and the entire Maho area was so much fun! The Turquoise Shell is just a short drive to that area of the island. All in all, the whole St. Maarten/St. Martin/Saba/Anguilla trip was fantastic. I will definitely stay at The Turquoise Shell Inn again, and would recommend it to anyone!

My wife and I were looking for a low to moderately priced place in a good location. We didn't expect a fancy resort, but this place exceeded our expectations. The location is superb. It's just literally a few steps from beautiful private Simpson Bay beach. It's only a very short walk to everything you need, including good restaurants, and only a short drive from the airport and good shopping. Our room was very clean, and was larger than we expected, with a full kitchenette. Most of all, the owner was very friendly and attentive to our needs, much like you would get at a very high priced B & B. Don't expect beautifully clean properties surrounding the inn...there apparently are very few zoning laws, as there are some trashy spots close by. But the inn property itself is well kept and charming. And just across the street from the inn is a beautiful marina housing multi-million dollar yachts. We would love staying here again.

We went to St. Maarten to get married, we stayed at Maho 4 nights and moved to T. Shell for the remainder of our stay to get away from the business of the Maho area (which is still great) Our honeymoon time at T.Shell was very nice. SO clean and conveniently located for walking. Walking a few days is a must so see everything and all the little bars and hidden treasures !! But a car at night is a must for it gets a little scary walking to far, locals don't recommend it. But the owners of T. Shell are great, the rooms are great, cute little pool, CLEAN-CLEAN-CLEAN. Simpson Bay beach is right behind the hotel, quiet and few people, calm for swimming. Free parking at the Shell Inn is also a plus. Would go back tomorrow if we could !!!

Simpson Bay: Turquoise Shell Inn: "Found a Gem"
Feb 6, 2006  A TripAdvisor Member, Walnut Creek, CA

The Turquoise Shell Inn is a sweet 12 unit Inn with pool, positioned between the Bay and the Lagoon at Simpson Bay. We had a 2 room unit with a complete kitchen. The best thing about the Inn is the charming staff who took care of our every need. This isn't a fancy upscale site, the plumbing has it's problems and there is no central air but the fans worked well and our room was clean and well appointed. If we get back to that area, I would definitely stay their again.

The Turquoise Shell is a cozy inn with superb service. We stayed for a long weekend over New Years and were very happy with the accommodations. We were traveling on a budget, and found the location perfect for walking to a number of excellent restaurants (El Rancho especially) or getting taxi or bus rides to shop in Phillipsburg and explore the French side. The hotel offers day access to the tranquil Simpson Bay beach. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The Turquoise Shell is definitely recommended for long weekends or week-long stays. The kitchenette is fully equipped, the rooms are very clean, and it's a great place to rest and rejuvenate after all the fun of this island.

Just returned from a delightful stay at the Turquoise Shell Inn on Simpson Bay in St. Maarten. The accommodations while small were very clean and had all the modern conveniences. What makes this place so special and made our stay so memorable were are all the little unexpected "touches" performed by proprietors. You won't go wrong if you spend your stay in St. Maarten here.

Sint Maarten The Friendly Island

a trip journal
Author: Dresden Klaus
I spent 4 weeks at Sint Maarten / Saint Martin from 11-28-2004 to 12-26-2004

It was my first trip to the Caribbean and to that island. I stayed at the Turquoise Shell Inn Hotel http://www.tshellinn.com and liked it very much. Carter and Mark the owners been very friendly and the hotel is nice and clean, located close to the main boulevard, on the other side the ocean, a good place to stay.

This island is a great place for a vacation and I hope to return some day!

Dear boys,
Just to say thanks for a wonderful stay at your place. After a wobbly start by my wife she ended by having her best holiday ever. Your place was just ideal and the service great, please send our regards to Polly. I am just printing off some photo's to remind me of the colour of the sea and the sand, what a contrast to back here in England. If you let us, we hope to come back again.
